GameSpot has a review of the Virtua Fighter 5 rated it 8.1/10 and writes;
“There are two new characters in VF5, as well. El Blaze is a Mexican wrestler who looks a lot like Rey Mysterio Jr. and uses a lot of great-looking wrestling moves. Eileen uses the martial art of kou-ken, which is just a fancy way of saying she sort of fights like a monkey…Virtua Fighter 5 is a great-looking game from top to bottom. The characters look great and animate well, with the lone exception of their mouths, and teeth, which just look a little off when characters speak at the end of a fight. There are plenty of different backgrounds in the game, and they all look great while also figuring into the fights.”

IGN has a review of the Virtua Fighter 5 rated it 8.8/10 and writes;
“When playing against another human being, Virtua Fighter 5 is incredibly satisfying. Even when getting your ass handed to you by a superior player, the smooth controls and deep combat compel you to play more. Unfortunately, brawling with the AI isn’t nearly as gratifying since the CPU is actually quite tepid…It offers one of the most intuitive and robust fighting systems ever assembled and the customization options and quest mode are great fun.”

1up has a review of the Virtua Fighter 5 rated it 9/10 and writes;
“The controls, as ever, are rapid-fire and responsive — at least when the PS3’s Sixaxis Bluetooth controllers aren’t having data-transfer farts. The Sixaxis, it should be said, is just not up to to the task of letting players input the required motions to pull off some of the game’s most powerful moves…Based on the “Version B” upgrade found in VF5 machines in arcades, the PS3 version brings a staggering assortment of clothes, accessories, and accoutrement to dress up your favorite fighters…The graphics are a close, nearly indiscernible approximation of the arcade version’s Lindbergh-powered visuals, which is to say they’re awesome.”

GamePro has a review of the Virtua Fighter 5 rated it 4.5/5 and writes;
“But as good as it looks, the game is more than a pretty face. It has tremendous depth and a monster list of moves, which is both good and bad. Virtua Fighter 5 isn’t a ‘hold-your-hands’ fighter; unless you’re already familiar with the franchise, you’ll be fighting tooth and nail just to complete the normal difficulty setting…Pros: Best Virtua Fighter ever. Cons: Steep learning curve for n00bs.

GameSpy has a review of the Virtua Fighter 5 rated it 5/5 and writes;
“What truly makes VF 5 shine so brightly lies in its controls. While VF’s detractors have complained that the series is too hardcore for the average gamer, who they’d say would rather rattle off button-mashing combos with Heihachi or Helena, VF 5 is surprisingly accessible for anyone who’s picked up a 3D fighting game…Pros: Instant classic that combines face-melting graphics, gameplay that suits both casuals and hardcore, and guaranteed trash-talking bliss. Cons: No (at the very least) online leaderboards, occasionally mega-cheap A.I., some might feel it’s not different enough from VF 4.”

ComputerAndVideoGames has a review of the Virtua Fighter 5 rated it 9.1/10 and writes;
” Technical improvements have a bearing on how VF5 plays, as well. Character animation is smoother and more finely captured than ever before, while collision detection between character models is perfect, which combined gives the impression that Virtua Fighter 5 is paced slightly slower than VF4. We were a little surprised by this at first, but after a few hours of play, it began to feel perfectly natural and somehow more mature and well balanced than VF4.”

GameZone has a review of the Virtua Fighter 5 rated it 8.9/10 and writes;
“Where Virtua Fighter 5 differs from the rest (except for, in part, Virtua Fighter 4) is how juggles are applied. Players can attack and nearly slaughter – albeit without any blood, bruises, or other visual damage – their opponents just by striking them before they land after an airborne assault. The results are spectacular.”

GameDaily has a review of the Virtua Fighter 5 and writes;
“Players can access a Command List for each character by pausing the game. Here, people will discover combos and power moves; along with grapples, described here as “offensive maneuvers”. They can also learn how to break out of a throw with a quick defensive maneuver, done more realistically here than in the counter-riddled Dead Or Alive 4. In addition, gamers shift movement upwards and downwards with a double-tap on the directional pad. This sets up opponents for a good counter-attack, while dodging an incoming punch or kick.”

GameInformer has a review of the Virtua Fighter 5 and writes;
“…Virtua Fighter 5 is an outstanding fighting game.Customizing your characters is fun, playing against your friends is a blast, and the Quest mode will most certainly pass a lot of hours if you enjoy the Virtua Fighter franchise. While I would love to give this a higher score, its lack of online play and dearth of innovation hurts its entertainment value. Fans will enjoy it, but there isn’t much else here.”
