Vanguard: Saga of Heroes

Last updated: Review by TrustedReviews (added on 15/02/07)

“Vanguard: Saga of Heroes” features stunning environments reminiscent of classic fantasy oil paintings, as well as three fully-developed layers of gameplay (diplomacy, adventuring and crafting), along with a comprehensive character creation tool. As players reach higher levels, they can traverse the world freely on flying dragons, voyaging across far-reaching lands in a breathtaking, non-instanced world.

TrustedReviews has reviewed the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (rating: 7/10) and writes;
“There are glitches here and there, and the odd clumsy bit of modelling, but overall this is as close to Oblivion as MMOs currently get. A lot of attention has clearly gone into landscape, architecture and creature design, and – as in WoW – it’s tempting just to explore and see everything the three continents have to offer….The first of the third-age MMORPGs looks fantastic, but feels a bit of a throwback to the first. A great step-up from WoW if you want more complexity and choice, but the more casual player is still better served by WoW or Guild Wars.”

GameRadar has reviewed the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (rating: 8/10) and writes;
“Vanguard has a huge amount of promise, thanks to innovative features that could satisfy everything from a diplomat to a hack and slash addict. The world that it all takes place in is amazing on terms of size and beauty. However, this is a hardcore MMO designed first and foremost for devoted players with lots of time to invest - just to get to level 10 will take you a few days, whereas you can hit that level in WoW in a long afternoon. If you’re not looking for a game that will take you on the long haul, maybe World of Warcraft would be a better fit.”

CheatCodeCentral has reviewed the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (rating:3.7/5) and writes;
“Whether traveling the green hills of Thestra, the jungles of Kojan, or the deserts of Qalia, you will be delighted with the massive attention to detail of the game. This sense of realism allows for total immersion into the game right away. Unfortunately, the beauty comes with a price. In order to keep the lavish graphics you must endure the sluggish gameplay, even with a moderately powerful system. Battling in a dungeon against several foes will actually require you to turn off several of the visual effects that make Vanguard stand out. The harmonic score is even harmed by the repetitively bland NPC mission dialogues.”

YahooGames has reviewed the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (rating:3.5/5) and writes;
“If you’re looking for interesting quests to propel you through the game, you may be out of luck. Only a few quests have storylines — in fact, a backstory for the world itself is hard to find. The NPCs mostly give out brain-dead “kill 10 rats” quests, and those are poorly written and include uninspiring snippets of voice acting. And the thin content is part of a larger problem: Vanguard feels like it wasn’t quite ready to launch. While free of crash bugs, problems in interface, gameplay, and content abound. “

GameDaily has reviewed the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (rating:7/10) and writes;
“It should be said that Vanguard can’t be easily picked up and played. Those new to the MMO scene might be a tad overwhelmed by all of the different modes and the “Get out there and do something… anything!” kind of game play. Those who cut their teeth on World of Warcraft’s action may be put off by the slower pacing and the less forgiving death penalty…That said, people willing to put in the effort will certainly be rewarded, since each level in every mode feels like a major accomplishment. Vanguard, with vast opportunities and size, requires time to grow on players. Patient gamers who enjoy tons of options will find many riches and glory her”

GameSpy has reviewed the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (rating:3/5) and writes;
“That isn’t to say that Vanguard isn’t worth playing. This is the kind of game that one could easily spend a handful of hours of every day for the foreseeable future on and still not discover all the world has to offer. The sheer scale of it all is quite daunting. Dungeons aren’t forty-five minute affairs to blow through on your lunch break; these are massive multi-tiered jaunts that will keep you entertained for an entire evening at the very least.”

AtomicGamer has reviewed the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (rating:3/5) and writes;
“While I think that one could certainly do worse than buying Vanguard, those looking for a World of Warcraft killer are likely going to be disappointed - especially those without cutting edge computers. The developers seemed to have tried to bring back the “glory days” of the original Everquest, but when we look at past subscriber numbers for MMORPGs, it seems like this strategy is a little at odds with what players want. I seriously doubt that Vanguard will ever topple the current king, but I think they can find their niche with the more hardcore players and those who just think WoW is a little too easy.”
