Digital Trends has a review of the Toshiba HD-XA2 rated it 9/10 and writes;
“The HD-XA2 produced superior visual images in 1080p. Will the 1080p images from a Blu-ray Disc player look much better? It’s hard to say. Personally, I believe that HD DVD looks better than Blu-ray, as the images have a lot of punch. The colors are more vibrant overall with more crisp detail…Highs: Excellent image quality; fast startup time, attractive remote control. Lows: Still relatively expensive.”

HDguru has a review of the Toshiba HD-XA2 and writes;
“The HD-XA2 is more compact and lighter than its predecessor, with a height of just 2.93,” a depth of 13.54″ and weighing in at 13.64 lbs, compared to the older HD-XA1’s 4.53” height and whopping 19.58 pound weight…The HD-XA2 is marvelous machine. The high definition images it produces, coupled with its 1080p output ability place it on the same performance level as the best Blu-ray machines. The HD-XA2’s standard definition DVD upconversion quality, place its standard definition disc performance ahead of all other high definition players tested to date.”

HomeTheaterblog has a review of the Toshiba HD-XA2 and writes;
“Scene after scene of ‘The Hulk’ with the HD-A2 exemplified what the format is capable of, crystal clear, highly detailed, high definition with superb audio quality. This consistency from shot to shot, in my opinion at least, plays a huge part in the immersion factor that’s so critical in a pre-recorded films ability to draw you in and just let the story unfold. Another interesting thing I keep re-discovering with HD DVD is text legibility. For example when an actor is holding/reading a newspaper you can often make out the actual text on the page and not just the headlines.”

HomeTheaterForum has a user review of the Toshiba HD-XA2 and writes;
“And I just got through watching The Hulk HD DVD. Another superb transfer, and another reference disk for HD DVD. As far as the sound, these two HD DVDs offered DD+ and I can say it’s impressive. I still have to listen to the TrueHD soundtrack of Batman Begins to see what that’s like though. All in all, I was initially a bit concerned spending the amount I did on the XA2, but no longer. Now I just hope that more movies start coming out in HD DVD.”

CNET has an editor’s take of the Toshiba HD-XA2 and writes;
“The benefits of 1080p are hard to pin down–in fact, given a display that de-interlaces 1080i correctly, and most do, we expect the picture quality improvement from 1080i to 1080p output to be minor, if not nonexistent. HDMI 1.3’s chief video-quality benefit, according to its backers, is better color depth that’s less subject to false contouring, among other problems.”
