CamcorderInfo have reviewed the Sony DCR-SR40 and write;
“The Sony DCR-SR40 is a camcorder that offers mediocre video performance, only basic features, and no way of adding accessories. The SR40 is the epitome of a bare-bones camcorder. As per the company’s hallmark, all Sonys are easy to use, but this entry-level offering one-ups even its Handycam relatives. The recording media is integrated into the body, and there are only a few external buttons and controls making this perhaps the most idiot-proof camcorder ever. Ease-of-use trumps other concerns for a great many users who just want to make sure nothing goes wrong when they capture their daughter’s birthday party, and we expect the SR40 to do well among point-and-shooters. ”
CNET Australia have reviewed the Sony DCR-SR40 where they rate the camcorder 7/10 and write;
“Despite its smallish CCD and an effective pixel count of 340,000, we were impressed with the image quality of the DCR-SR40. While obviously not as sharp as the footage you’d get from a camcorder with more pixels, such as Sony’s own DCR-SR80 or DCR-SR100 models, the SR40’s footage still yielded an admirable amount of detail with few compression artefacts and well-saturated colours. Colours were a touch cool when shooting outdoors and slightly warm indoors, but not as bad as those of some other camcorders we’ve seen…
The bottomline: Sony’s DCR-SR40 is a solid, midlevel, hard-drive-based option, though still-image buffs won’t be impressed with this camcorder’s submegapixel snapshots.”
