DigitalTrends reviews the Samsung SCH-u740 (rating: 6.5/10) and writes;
“Reception is steady on Verizon’s EV-DO network, and call quality is crisp and clean. You can hear the interior speakers even with the flap closed and speakers seemingly flush with the keypad. Ringtones are loud and the vibrate mode is adequate. …Mirroring its dual-hinge lid, the u740 is a dichotomy. It does so many things well — great little camera, great reception and voice quality, speedy wireless Web service — but then makes them frustrating and difficult to use. Great ideas, but they’re poorly executed. Disappointing. “
Mobiledia reviews the Samsung SCH-u740 and writes;
“For users craving a QWERTY keyboard phone, the SCH-U740 is the best choice with a fair mix of networking opportunities, entertainment functions, specifically text-based ones. But with a focus on maximizing the use of its QWERTY keyboard, the menus and navigation systems are not streamline enough for a user looking to quickly run through emails, text messages and photos.”
PCWorld reviews the Samsung SCH-u740 (rating: 81/100) and writes;
“The device’s battery life was far less impressive than its text capabilities. The SCH-u740 lasted 4.75 hours in our lab tests–better than the quoted talk time of 3.5 hours, but worse than talk time of many phones we’ve tested. Calls sounded clear at various signal strengths, and the clamshell design makes the phone comfortable to hold for even long calls….Despite having a few quirks, the SCH-u740 should appeal to anyone looking for an attractive, inexpensive phone with deep messaging capabilities.”
MobileTechReview reviews the Samsung SCH-u740 (rating: 3.5/5) and writes;
“The QWERTY backlit keyboard is fantastic given its small size with good spacing and tactile feedback. But the standard number pad is embedded in the QWERTY keyboard and the dual-masked keys are distracting when dialing, and those alpha keys hanging off the bottom of the number pad are not going to help when dialing by feel. Put the phone in landscape mode to make use of the keyboard and things are much better, though the 10 sideways numbers (with micro vanity letters too– and we mean really small) masked above the alpha keys look a bit like non-Western characters that need deciphering. Only you can decide if you need something with a large dedicated number pad unfettered by QWERTY goodness (if so, check out the LG enV) or something small and slim yet perfect for messaging. The keys are definitely not ideal for men with very big fingers.”
Mobileburn has a review of the Samsung SCH-u740 and writes;
“Overall, I am happy with the look and feel as well as the options the Samsung SCH-u740 provides, but I definitely struggle with its many quirks. Most such issues seem to be related directly to the Verizon UI or to Verizon’s V CAST services. I do certainly love the option of switching from regular predictive text input to a full QWERTY keyboard in one full swing…Pros: Excellent battery life, QWERTY keyboard, flexible design. Cons: Potential durability issues, somewhat clumsy to use, average camera.”
Infosync has a review of the Samsung SCH-u740 (rating: 61%) and writes ;
“Messaging on the SCH-U740 is good, but it should be a much better experience. The phone comes preset for AIM, Yahoo, and MSN instant messaging, but for e-mail, you are required to install extra software and go through a long, buggy process online from your PC…The keypad itself was also a bit cramped for comfortable typing. The keys run close the ridge at the right end of the phone, and are small enough that you’ll have to keep your eyes on your fingers…Our favorite: One-touch access to messaging from the soft keys.”
CNET has a review of the Samsung SCH-u740 (rating: 8/10) and writes;
“We tested the dual-band Samsung SCH-u740 (CDMA 800/1900; EV-DO) in San Francisco using Verizon Wireless service. We were impressed with the call quality, which was very good, and callers reported little to no static…The good: The Samsung SCH-u740 has a sleek and attractive design with a cool, dual-flip hinge that lets you view the display in either portrait or landscape mode. It has a QWERTY keyboard, access to Verizon’s V Cast offerings, and a full array of multimedia goodies. The bad: The Samsung SCH-u740 lacks a dedicated camera key on the phone’s exterior, and the video quality is mediocre. We’re also not fans of the touch screen music controls.”
Infosync has a preview of the Samsung SCH-u740 ;
“Resembling the Samsung SGH-D307, the SCH-U740 is a dual-hinge phone, which means that the hinge opens on two axes. Opened across the horizontal, you have a standard clamshell; opened across the vertical axis and you have a QWERTY clamshell, resembling the LG VX9900 enV…The hinge is solid in design, it opens with a reassuring snap. The phone is much thinner than the SGH-D307, though not RAZR-thin, and its screens seem larger than those on the LG enV.”
