GameSpot has a review of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI rated it 6.9/10 and writes;
“Although some of the basic mechanics have been simplified, Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI still has a very steep learning curve that will prove daunting for newcomers. The tutorial alone will take three or four hours to get through, and each of the more than 20 available scenarios can easily take 10 or 20 hours to complete. The replay value is nearly endless, but the sheer amount of content is limited by the game’s glacial pace. A 20-hour scenario demands a tremendous amount of patience, because you can spend anywhere from five minutes to a half hour on a single turn, only to end that turn almost exactly the same way you began it.”

GamingTrend has a review of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI rated it 77% and writes;
“One of the first things that you’ll pick up on with ROTK XI is that the graphics have been quite heavily polished, making this a very pretty game to look at… The 3D game map changes with the seasons, and you can generally tell the difference between different types of units. The various duels and debates that you go into look almost like a fighting game from mid-way through the PS2’s lifetime, and the character pictures are rather solid. Pros:Beautiful Chinese-inspired artwork, Very nice soundtrack, INSANE amounts of depth. Cons: Unfortunately, it’s heavy on the micromanagement, Very much a niche title, Rather limited voice-acting.”

GamerNode has a review of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI rated it 6.9/10 and writes;
“Purists will enjoy it all, in fact. Fans of the series have in RTK XI everything they are looking for, with a fresh look and a few new options and upgrades. Newcomers, however, will be met by a slow, tedious experience with inexplicit detailing of progress, and oftentimes overwhelming information and menus. The Romance of The Three Kingdoms series seems to be both blessed and cursed by its eternal niche status.”

TotalPlayStation has a review of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI rated it 7/10 and writes;
“Conscious effort was put into breathing a little life into what had become an almost painfully bland-looking game in the past (so much so that I never would have gotten as far as I did in this game if it hadn’t been updated). The audio, too, offers a plethora of tastes; Japanese/English voice work (minimal, but certainly more reserved than the Warriors stuff), rich, moody music thick with period-perfect instruments yet still subdued enough that few tracks actually grate or force themselves to the fore. The production values this time around are markedly better than the series has ever seen.”

GamesRadar has a review of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI rated it 6/10 and writes;
Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI is a pretty polarizing title. Longtime addicts that have kept up with the series and crave more of its rare gameplay will eat it up. Gamers that have never cared about or have never heard of the series don’t have any reasons to give it a whirl. There’s really no getting around it. Either you like this style of game or you never will…You’ll love:Deep and layered gameplay, Extremely high replay value, Statistics and number crunching galore. You’ll hate: Improved graphics aren’t impressive, Active combat is boring, Lacks features to bring newcomers in.”
