“The H4000 seems to respond more quickly to the remote control than the built-in buttons, which is rather odd. The remote works well, but is very directional, so you will need a very clear line-of-sight. Also, the Smart Play feature is really cool; it will remember where you stopped playback on a DVD movie and allow you to resume where you left off. It even works after the player is turned off, or if you swap DVDs…Highs: 1080p upscaling through component video; HDMI cable included; smart memory; region-free. Lows:No SACD or DVD Audio Playback; slow startup sometimes; spotty remote reception.”

“Overall playback functionality of the H4000 was excellent. The H4000 easily played commercial DVDs, several DVD-R/DVD+RW discs, as well as a selection of CD/CDR/RW/HDCD/DTS format discs. In terms of video performance, the Component and HDMI connection both provided a good result, in both standard and upscaled resolutions…The audio performance of the H4000 was very good. Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound options worked well, with excellent imaging. The user has the option of using the digital audio ouputs or the 5.1 channel analog outputs to access both Dolby Digital and DTS surround signals.”

“Overall the player was very easy to use. Setting up the device was simple and getting through the menus are straight forward. The remote is easy to use and has dedicated buttons for most of the features you’ll use each time you watch a movie. So if you have a Harmony Remote you will have to put those buttons in your soft keys. After about ten minutes with the H4000 we were very comfortable using it. Now if your TV already comes with a good scaler or you have a dedicated scaler you can still find value in this player as it can output 480i and 576i from the HDMI output. This keeps the signal in the digital domain so that your TV or dedicated scaler can upconvert the exact signal that is encoded on the DVD. The last nice feature is that the H4000 is region free right out of the box.”
