PDAGold have reviewed the HTC TyTn where they conclude;
“The communication capabilities are excellent. In summary: the device combines GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS with support for HSDPA, Bluetooth, and WiFi b/g. If the HTC TyTN has any weak spots, it is definitely not communication. I tried to use the TyTN as a cell phone, as a modem, as a Pocket PC with integrated phone – and it delivered on the roles without any substantial problems. As for communication, the TyTN is a sure bet… Enough praise, though; the TyTN has a few weak spots, too. First, it is a problem common to all brand new models: instability of the system and crashing applications. It is not as bad as it was with first version of the Wizard, but the TyTN has a long way to perfection. A good example is the camera application, which served me a good portion of “fun”. On the other hand, remember somewhat lazy responses of the system, jerky audio playback over the stereo Bluetooth headset, video playback issues, and low volume of the phone speaker. Nevertheless, if HTC patches the ROM to fix the issues soon enough, the HTC TyTN will deservedly belong to the elite among pocket computers.”
TrustedReviews have reviewed the HTC TyTn where they conclude;
“I’d been waiting for a smaller format 3G connected Pocket PC for a long time, and the TyTN lived up to my expectations. It’s neat, tidy, well designed and pocketable. The keyboard works well and it is nice to see the scroll wheel return.
I would have liked a hold button as it is easy to accidentally hit some of the side mounted buttons. A bit more memory either built in or on a supplied card would have been nice too. And the stylus is poor too. But taken as a whole the TyTN brings the Pocket PC format up to date nicely..”
PocketLint have reviewed the HTC TyTn where they rate the phone 9/10 and conclude;
“In practice and the TyTN is not only very easy to use, but also comes with a number of nifty features. Examples include automatic rotation of the screen when you change from portrait to landscape to use the keyboard, and dedicated buttons for virtually everything from using the phones web browser (Internet Explorer) to making a video call or checking your connectivity status. …Where the TyTN succeeds is in its connectivity options. The inclusion of Wireless, 3G, Edge and even the new HSPDA standard means there is bound to be some connection on offer wherever you are in the world. Combine this with an easy to use keyboard, a large screen and Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 (it’s the OS that now features push email) and we struggle to find faults with the device.”
MTekk have reviewed the HTC TyTn where they rate the phone 9/10 and conclude;
“This score would have been higher if not for the fact that HTC did drop the ball when it comes to Quality assurance on the TyTN series. The magnitude of complaints amongst forums and cautious retailers is sure to have an impact on this device in its initial quarter. Also HTC also lost marks for a lack of value-added software despite a growing trend towards including more software (Dopod, Atom Exec) and also for not releasing the device in Australia.”
MyPocketMobile have reviewed the HTC TyTn where they rate the phone 4/5 and write;
“The design of HTC TyTN is excellent. It measures only 112 x 58 x 22 mm. It is thinner than K-JAM . Taking into account that the TyTN has a large screen and a QWERTY sliding keyboard then its size is considered normal. If it was smaller then you could not easily use the keyboard or take advantage of the large screen. It is a trade off, if you want full QWERTY keyboard and relatively large screen then you need to compromise for the size.”
TechDigest have reviewed the HTC TyTn where they rate the phone 4/5 and write;
“The HTC Tytn is a good Pocket PC. The design is attractive and ergonomic, and it’s not heavy enough to make you walk with a limp when it’s in your pocket. Functions wise, it’s all fairly intuitive and doesn’t take long to set up ready to go. However, whilst HTC believe it should appeal to business and leisure users alike, the business functionality and the common sense design means that it’s unlikely to get in Paris Hilton’s handbag any time soon. It’s available on O2 for as little as £85 (with a pretty bulky contract) but will set you back over £500 SIM free. Ouch.”
3GUK have reviewed the HTC TyTn and write;
“..on the plus side, the TyTN is an ideal mobile email system. Holding it in two hands and tapping at the keyboard with thumbs allows for fast typing – faster, this reviewer found, than that possible with the likes of a BlackBerry or other device with a smaller front facing keyboard – and as yet there is no 3G BlackBerry anyway…The TyTN isn’t for everyone. It can be used to do a huge amount and is best suited to professional users or those who simply need a lot of ‘stuff’ in their pocket at all times. It is going to be overkill if all you do with a 3G handset is the odd bit of browsing and video calling. But if you are looking for the Swiss army knife of smartphones, then the TyTN could be it.”
mobile-gadgeteer have reviewed the HTC TyTn and conclude;
“I was seriously considering the TyTN as my next purchase, but I can’t afford the US$700+ at this time and without the certainty that the TyTN will work on T-Mobile’s 3G data network later this year or early in 2007 I didn’t want to sell my Nokia E61 to offset about half the cost. The only improvement I would like is a second shift key on the right side of the keyboard and the use of a standard 2.5 or 3.5mm headset jack. The TyTN is very well constructed, has a professional looking gray and silver finish, has a very usable keyboard that I was able to type very quickly on and just feels great in your hand. If you are looking for the latest and greatest Windows Mobile Phone Edition then you can pick up a SIM-unlocked HTC TyTN from David for US$739.”
