PC Pro reviews the HTC P4550 (TYTN II) and writes;
“Verdict: A superbly packaged do-everything mobile workhorse that will appeal to business users and gadget freaks alike…Ergonomics and controls are superb – as well as a full complement of buttons and a five-way navigation control, there’s a scroll wheel, plus, of course, the excellent slide-out keyboard. ”

“The good: HSDPA, GPS, Wi-Fi, 3 megapixel camera, QWERTY keyboard. The bad: Big, heavy, no cool factor, clunky. We say: So much power, so little style makes this a phone for the Microsoft lovers out there and not many else.”

IT week reviews the HTC P4550 (TYTN II) and writes;
“The device has a removable battery with a capacity of 1350mAh, which HTC expects will give a talk time of up to 264 minutes using 3G and 420 minutes on GSM, while standby time is about 350 hours. This fits with our experience, as we were able to use the device for several days between recharges, with battery life depending on how heavily we used the Wi-Fi.”

RegHardware reviews the HTC P4550 (TYTN II) and writes;
“As Windows Mobile 6 devices go, the TyTN II takes some beating. HTC has raised the bar with the feature list and improved keyboard usability dramatically with its display and keyboard engineering nous. Connectivity is excellent too. And GPS is a welcome and genuinely useful extra. And while the TyTN II is a heavyweight phone in the literal sense, pound-for-pound it does deliver a cracking performance. This is one heck of a smartphone”

OSnews reviews the HTC P4550 (TYTN II) and writes;
“The Kaiser feels amazing in the hand. It has a good construction and a good size. It’s a tiny bit longer than our previous QTek 9100 and heavier, but it is a bit thinner. It feels much bulkier than the iPhone, but on the other hand, you would appreciate its hardware keyboard that exposes itself after you slide the upper part of the device.”

“It is the tilting screen that steals the show as far as the HTC TyTN II is concerned, but there are other factors that draw us to it as well. The plentiful features, good mini keyboard and software extras all add up to make the TyTN II a strong contender in today’s mobile device arena.”

“With the P4550, HTC has taken what was already a competent smartphone and thought really hard about how to make it better. The result is a handset that does pretty much everything you could possibly want a handset to do. It’ll work anywhere in the world, has fast data connections, a qwerty keyboard for fast and comfortable messaging, a tilting screen and even a GPS receiver for satellite navigation.”

Just to keep things in a balanced perspective… as an owner of this device I have to say firstly that I personally love it. It has all the features and functionality that I’ve been waiting for in a single device, and seems to do everything pretty well.
However there are a LOT of folks who are displeased with the device, mainly because it’s sort of like buying a porche with factory flaws that make it run and handle about as well as a Toyota Corolla….
Apparently the device is missing some critical drivers, which make the entire device function about the equivalent as running your PC in safe mode. Having said that – even so it is still pretty good, but it makes you realize just how much better this thing SHOULD be performing. (and no this issue is NOT just about video acceleation drivers, this affects the entire device as a whole).
Anyways there is a LOT more to this than can be summed up in a quick post, but for those interested, the details can be found here: http://htcclassaction.org/
Makes for some interesting reading, and at the very least, if you are considering purchasing one of these, then you owe it to yourself to be informed prior to making the purchase.
