Trusted Reviews reviews the Final Fantasy XII, they rated the game 8.0/10 and write:
“This is true of so many of FFXII’s gameplay and interface enhancements. Square-Enix has successfully bridged the old gap between gameplay and combat, giving you direct, hands-on control of your party leader, and leaving the rest of the work to a set of surprisingly clever and – more importantly – programmable AIs. Battle is no-longer turn based. In a system reminiscent of Bioware’s work on Knights of the Old Republic, you move your party leader in real time and pause the action to assign him targets…While the pacing flags from time to time, this is the most enjoyable and accessible Japanese RPG in ages, and an important turning point not just for Final Fantasy, but the genre as a whole.”

Gamespot reviews the Final Fantasy XII, they rated the game 9.0/10 and write:
“Exploring, fighting, watching the story unfold, and managing your characters using the gambits and licenses systems are where you’ll be spending most of your time with Final Fantasy XII, and there’s a lot to it. Expect the quest to last you a good 40 or more hours the first time through, and on top of that, there are many hidden and optional areas to explore, bounty-hunter missions to undertake, special rewards to unlock, and more. The game even features a surprisingly well done bestiary, which provides some lively remarks about all the hundreds of different creatures and foes you’ll encounter.”

IGN reviews the Final Fantasy XII, they rated the game 9.5/10 and write:
“Another welcome addition to Final Fantasy XII is its “Gambit System.” Previously, this system was compared to the preset AI commands of .hack or other titles with similar “character macros,” but Square Enix has taken that idea to a whole new level. Using the Gambit, gamers can customize the behaviors of their partymates with an unprecedented amount of detail. In fact, you’ll be able to program up to 12 separate situations that each individual character can react to and order them into a hierarchy of importance…Final Fantasy XII is a fantastic RPG. It blows all of its PS2 competition this year right out of the water and is among the all time elite role-players ever made for the system. Kingdom Hearts, Devil Summoner, Xenosaga III, Tales of the Abyss”

Eurogamer reviews the Final Fantasy XII, they rated the game 10/10 and write:
“It’s not hard to see us looking back in five years time and seeing FFXII as a pivotal, changing moment in how RPGs are designed; a game which drew on the experience of Final Fantasy’s branches into tactical strategy and massively multiplayer, as well as on the more mature storytelling of other mediums, and folded it back into the number series, to wonderful result. Fans will, of course, debate the merits of Final Fantasy XII for a long time - but our own experience with this game fully justifies giving it the highest accolade we can award.”

GameSpy reviews the Final Fantasy XII, they rated the game 5/5 and write:
Pros: Every aspect of the game is individually impressive, the combined overall impression is even better; incorporates original ideas but remains true to its name and genre expectations. Cons: Distinctive story and art direction may lack universal appeal; makes major changes to what many see as a proven formula; falls short of completely transcending or redefining RPGs.”

GamePro reviews the Final Fantasy XII, they rated the game 5/5 and write:
“FFXII was produced by the same creative team behind two of Square’s cult hits, Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story, which explains the outstanding character design, stellar art direction, and soaring musical score…The cinematic sequences of the game are beautiful as expected, and occur fairly frequently in short bursts. The opening cinematic is filled with mind-blowing detail and thrilling action as it immediately draws you into Ivalice’s state of affairs. Most notably, FFXII gives you the option to play in regular 4:3 aspect ratio or 16:9 widescreen, giving those with HDTVs an even more amazing experience.”
