Creative Labs Vado HD Pocket Video Camcorder Phone Reviews

CNET reviews the Creative Labs Vado HD and writes;

The good: Solid 720p video; ultraslim design; removable, rechargeable battery; easy to use; one-touch video uploading to YouTube and Photobucket; includes mini HDMI connector and bundled cable for outputting 1080i video to an HDTV. The bad: No flash-memory slot; Mac users have to manually copy video files to their computers; white balance is slightly off and colors are a bit amped.”
Rating: ★★★½☆

PC World reviews the Creative Labs Vado HD and writes;

“The camcorder works with Windows XP and Vista, as well as with Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later. The integrated 8GB of storage holds up to 2 hours of 720p high-def video in HD+ mode (higher bit rate), up to 4 hours of footage in HD mode (still 720p video, but at a lower bit rate), and up to 8 hours of standard-definition VGA (640 by 480 resolution) video. For my testing, I mainly used the HD+ mode. While the 2-hour battery life is a bit short considering the Vado HD’s recording capacity, the battery is user-replaceable, so you can carry an extra battery along and swap it in when necessary…”
Rating: ★★★★½

MacWorld reviews the Creative Labs Vado HD and writes;

“The first thing that strikes you when comparing video shot with the Vado HD and Kodak Zi6 and Flip MinoHD is the Vado’s wider angle lens. From the same distance, you’ll get more in the frame with the Vado. This could come in handy when shooting in tight quarters but also may force you to get closer to your subject than they’re comfortable with so you can avoid using the zoom…”

DigitalCamera-hq reviews the Creative Labs Vado HD and writes;

“The Creative Vado HD is a simple looking, charcoal grey camcorder that can easily be tucked away into a pocket or purse. Its lightness and small dimensions are its most appealing feature, and it has adhered to the simple, straightforward layout pioneered by the Pure Digital Flip models…”

PC World previews the Creative Labs Vado HD and writes;

“The Vado HD supports three shooting modes–HD Plus, HD, and standard definition video. Unlike the Kodak Zi6, whose HD60 enhanced HD mode shoots 1,280 by 720 video at 60 frames per second, the Vado’s HD Plus simply shoots 720p video at a standard 30fps, but at a higher data rate–around 8.4 Mbps. In standard HD mode the data rate is about half that. Higher data rates generally result in better looking video and the Vado’s HD Plus does look better than regular HD..”

User Opinions

Creative Labs Vado HD Pocket Video Camcorder User Reviews

Excels in some ways, but some fundamental flaws make this a sub-optimal solution to portable video, by David Pearlman “sound fanatic”
Rating: ★★★☆☆

“The good: Very small, easily pocketable, very light. Comes with a rechargeable battery that can easily be replaced by the user, and which can easily power the camera long enough to fill up the memory (2 hours in HD mode). Very simple and minimalistic controls mean a very modest learning curve. Charges via any standard USB cable. Image stabilization built in (works OK)…”

I judge consumer electronics by my mother’s user experience, by G. C. Vachon “c_ster”
Rating: ★★★★★

“The video quality is pretty good [even with Mom's Parkinsons]. The colors are rich, the adaptation to different lighting is good. The sound quality is not bad [for such a tiny device]. The huge amount of video that can be shot is staggering [We had to increase Mom's bandwidth on her DSL line because of all the video she is shooting/sharing]…”

The camcorder SHOWDOWN: I’ve done the product comparisons for you, by A. Chandler “ArtistAlana”
Rating: ★★★☆☆

“…Clearest picture and sound was important to me, expert reviews that pointed to the Flip UltraHD as well and I liked the built in software and the case I can get to shoot underwater. It is the number one selling camcorder as well. So that was my personal decision-making process..”
