AnythingButIpod has a review of the Cowon iAudio X5;
“This is where the X5 really shines. It records via the 3.5 mm jack on the subpack at up to 320kb/s MP3 quality—and I mean quality. No noise, no dropouts, no dull sound. In direct comparison to recordings made with a Sony Hi-MD player, the X5 sounds remarkably better. The recording quality is at least semi-professional in my opinion. On a side note, I often use the X5 to record jam sessions and concerts of my band, and it hasn’t let me down once. It is possible to pause a recording and resume later. The X5 can also split tracks automatically when it detects silence—a pretty nice feature when recording directly from vinyl records, for example.”

Dapreview has a preliminary review of the Cowon iAudio X5;
“Build quality is excellent, as good as I’ve ever seen. Nice materials and everything fits together perfectly. Case is made entirely of a metallic alloy, feels solid. The paint job has a slight texture and seems to be scratch-resistant. Controls (buttons, joystick) are firm, not wiggly…You get excellent performance and nearly every feature in the book at a very competitive price ($ 300, MSRP). “

PCmag has a preliminary review of the Cowon iAudio X5 rated it 3.5/5 and writes;
Pros: Very good sound quality. Solid recording capabilities. Interesting sound enhancement options. Broad audio file format support. USB Host port lets you transfer images directly from a camera. Doesn’t require drivers. Cons: Joystick navigation can be tedious. Screen is small and blocky. No online music store support. Requires a small adapter for charging, line in/out, and USB.”

CNET has a review of the Cowon iAudio X5 rated it 7.7/10 and writes;
“We had no trouble with our test recordings. There was no obvious sound distortion when recording from the line-in port, even with a reasonably loud source, and our voice memos and FM recordings came in loud and clear…the X5’s video quality is about as good as you can expect with a 160×128-pixel display. The 260,000-color LCD rendered rich, vivid colors, but the relatively low resolution results in a slight screen-door effect, and we detected a little jerkiness in movement due to the player’s ceiling of 15 frames per second.”

iAudiophile has a review of the Cowon iAudio X5 rated it 91/100 and writes;
“Connecting the iAudio X5 to a computer is really easy. All you need is a USB cable and a sub-pack (also called mini-dock) or a cradle (optional). Also, the USB plug is standard on many other devices such as Canon and Sony digital cameras. This means that you only have to carry around one USB cable, which is great. Absolutely no software or drivers are required unless you are using Windows 98….Transfer speeds are ultra fast. Both read and write speeds averaged at about 16 MB/s.”

TopTenReviews has a review of the Cowon iAudio X5 rated it 3.5/4 and writes;
“The X5 had more features than any other player that we reviewed. It can record from a variety of sources, has time management tools, and displays slideshows and more. It cannot play games, but to be fair, few players can…Cowon’s iAudio X5L has generous features and a support team that is responsive and helpful. This player also has an exceptional battery life and is good for music playing. However, if you want a player with superior video ability see one of our higher ranked products.”
