+ REVIEWS (last updated: 11/03/07)

CNET.UK reviews the Asus W5fe (rating: 8.3/10) and writes;

“Don’t be fooled by the W5Fe’s size. It packs a potent CPU and enough RAM to put it in line with most high-end laptops. It racked up a strong PCMark 2006 score of 2,318 — which indicates it’ll cope happily with any current piece of consumer-oriented software…The W5Fe is a good laptop. It looks a tad dull, but let’s not forget the SideShow screen that lifts it way above the ordinary. If you reckon you can make use of this auxiliary display, perhaps when some better gadgets have been written, then its worth picking up. If not, we’d go for something like a Dell Latitude D420, which is more portable, has better battery life and integrated HSDPA wireless Web access… What we think: A solidly built laptop, but the jury’s still out on whether SideShow is worth paying extra for”

Laptopmag reviews the Asus W5fe (rating: 3/5) and writes;

“Our $2,199 test unit included a robust array of hardware components, especially impressive for an ultraportable: In addition to a high-end 2.16-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 processor, which provides two processing cores for improved multitasking performance, the W5fe comes equipped with 1.5GB of DDR2 RAM (the maximum for this system) and a gigantic 160GB, 5,400-rpm hard drive. Pros: High-quality, secondary display for Vista SideShow, fast performance, high-quality display, built-in 1.3-MP webcam with external controls. Cons: Expensive, ubpar battery life, limited SideShow functionality, short wireless range “

PCmag has a review of the Asus W5fe (rating: 3.5/5) and writes;

“The concept of a secondary display on your laptop is simple: Imagine scrolling through your e-mail, calendar information, media files, and stock tickers without flipping the laptop cover open, or better yet, without even turning your system on…The bottom line: The ASUS W5fe SideShow is an ultraportable with a full-color, 2.8-inch SideShow display on the front cover, with a gorgeous 12.1-inch widescreen on the opposing side.”

PCpro has a review of the Asus W5fe and writes;

“The W5fe is portable at 1.8kg and comfortable to use. The screen is well sized at 12.1in, although the 1,280 x 768 resolution doesn’t lend itself to many jobs beyond normal internet browsing, email and word processing. It’s certainly bright, though, and offers uncommonly good viewing angles, remaining almost perfectly viewable until your eye line is virtually parallel to the screen”

HardwareZone has a review of the Asus W5fe and writes;

“Our first impression of SideShow on the ASUS W5Fe notebook was sweet. Without powering on the notebook, the SideShow menu and functions can be accessed from a 5-way control pad that’s flanked by a “Back” and “Menu” buttons found beside the panel. The color panel is easy to navigate and allowed us to access and play media files within its inbuilt 1GB NAND flash memory. The laptop lid when flipped open, will cleverly re-orientate the SideShow’s display contents to rotate 180 degrees so that users from the rear of the laptop can still read and even use the SideShow functions.”
