PCWorld has a review of the Archos 404 camcorder and writes;

“In my tests, the image quality of the Archos 404 Camcorder’s video (captured at 640 by 480 resolution) was so-so. Skin tones looked a bit reddish and fine details were a little muddy. If you’re shooting video for informational purposes, such as in my trade show example, and you’ve got good lighting conditions, the video quality should be just fine. It’s also adequate for doing a quick video to upload to YouTube or MySpace, though I didn’t try that. But if you’re looking to capture golden memories, like the moment the Pin the Tail on the Donkey game goes hilariously awry at your kid’s birthday party, keep looking. This is not the camcorder for the job.”

LaptopMag has a review of the Archos 404 camcorder (rating: 3.5/5) and writes;

“What makes the 404 stand out from other PMPs is its 1.3-MP camcorder. While shooting video in a number of environments (inside the office, in a convention hall, at home, outdoors), the 404 fared extremely well in natural light and in really bright indoor light. In low-light situations, the visuals became very grainy. On the plus side, the footage was quite smooth, as the 404 plays back video shot with the camera at 30 frames per second (at 640 x 480-pixel resolution). Those concerned about battery life need not worry; the Archos 404 Camcorder churned out a solid three hours and one minute of video on our tests….If you’re on the hunt for an all-in-one convergence device, the Archos 404 Camcorder will fill the bill nicely. Although the integrated camera won’t replace the video quality produced by a true, standalone camcorder, it’s a handy tool if you want to travel light and shoot some footage to share with friends or post to YouTube.”

CNET has a review of the Archos 404 camcorder (rating: 7.7/10) and writes;

The good: The sleek and compact Archos 404 camcorder’s wonderful design is complemented by a plethora of features, including its built-in digital camera and camcorder, as well as support for subscription music (PlaysForSure). It has top-notch photo, video, and audio quality, and the player is also a good value. The bad: The Archos 404 camcorder doesn’t have an FM radio, the utilitarian interface can be confusing at times, and you’ll need to pay extra for an accessory that activates the player’s recording capabilities.”

PCmag has a review of the Archos 404 camcorder( rating: 4/5) and writes;

The bottom line: The Archos 404 is a very good pocket-size media player, and it can record video via the optional docking station, but I wish the battery were removable. Pros: Screen looks very bright and clear, Good video format support, Video playback is smooth, Video recording quality (with optional dock) is excellent, Can load content via drag-and-drop or WMP. Cons: Battery is not removable, Battery life is shorter than expected, Hold button doesn’t lock the volume buttons, Video recording requires optional dock.”

TV.com has a review of the Archos 404 camcorder (rating: 8/10) and writes;

The Good: The aggressively priced Archos 404 combines a 3.5-inch screen with a supercompact body; it’s a video, music (including subscriptions), and photo player with the ability to record line-in audio and video with optional adapters; good voice recorder; improved GUI; excellent video controls and photo playback features. The Bad: The Archos 404 lacks the kickstand and removable battery of its bigger brother, the 604; proprietary USB cable; no recording line-in video or audio out of the box; few bundled accessories; no FM tuner; weak equalizer.”

GadgetLab has a review of the Archos 404 camcorder rated it 7/10 and writes;

WIRED Promotes media production and consumption. Clean, loud sound. Decent video playback over TV or LCD. 3.5-inch screen dwarfs video iPod’s. Can connect to any Linux, Mac, or Windows computer as a hard drive, or be configured as a Windows MTP device. Reads PDFs and displays photos. Spacious 30GB hard drive. TIRED Slightly clunky menus. Requires bright light for clear video. No flash, optical zoom, or wireless connectivity. Needs $120 worth of accessories extras right out of the box. “
