Modified rapture…

The new iPod was my first MP3 player purchase, last night. Considering all the ballyhoo about the superior User Interface design of Mac procustcs, I’m not really that impressed.

Most of the music I listen to is classical, and the whole MP3 industry needs to sort out some fundamental naming problems for classical tracks. For a 2CD-box containing one Mahler symphony, I have two “Albums”, one for “GustavMahler; Symphonie No. 2; Abbado, Chicago SO”, the other for “Mah; Sym 2; Abbado, Chicago SO”.

First requirement: a relational database with a single ID for each composer, work, conductor and orchestra. Preferably with each work categorised as Symphony, String Quartet, Opera, etc. etc and the ability to have a number and/or name - for “Manfred Symphony”, “Symphony No. 6″, and “Symphony No. 6 (’Pathetique’)”. Mafor benefit: only one person has to know how to spell “Schubert”. Ideally each language gets its own versions of names for both people and works.

Second requirement: recognition of CDs 1 and 2 as part of the same bloody album. I’m really looking forward to putting the Ring cycle on there.

Third requirement: a Work/Disc/track hierarchy, that deals with more than one work on the same CD and more than one CD for the same work. Then we can end those idiotic track titles like “Strauss (R), 4 Last Songs, Op. posth. - Im Abendrot” where everything except the song title is the same on the next track and there isn’t enough screen width to see the song titles. Oh, and then the addition of “Work” to the categories like “Album”, “Playlist” and so on.

The same kind of tripe is served up in Windows Media Player, but as I had to download a whole new 50 Mb app just to put CD tracks onto my iPod, Apple seem to have had the opportunity to do that “right thing” that they’re supposed to be experts at.

Back in the user interface of the player itself, if I’m playing an album in that old fashioned “track 1, then track 2, then track 3″ way, I often wonder what’s coming up next. That means: MENU click, move down to Music, and select it, move to/select Albums. Now find the album that’s currently playing (for which you have to remember what it’s called - there’s nothing else to tell you.
Select it, find the little icon that shows which track is playing, and then read the line below. Then repeat most of this tedious operation backwards to return to where you were. Back in the stone age, you just picked up the record sleeve and looked. But Apple decided to waste a huge chunk of screen space for the album cover piuc that I didn’t bother downloading. “Next: Ruhe, Meine Seele” - that’s all we need. (Some hope…)

I could go on. But next time I see one of those Steve Jobs videos with screaming fans hailing a new product, I’ll have a bucket of salt handy.

And another thing: That damnfool name “Owner’s ipod” - apparently I had one chance to change it and I’ve missed the boat. That’s a really CRASS piece of design.

You can change it.
In itunes, when your iPod is connected, you click your iPod name (”Owner’s iPod”) twice - NOT double click as some get confused with - and it should allow you to change the name of it.

& with the whole song naming thing; Why don’t you just rename the songs so YOU would recognise it.
to be honest, i havent seen any other mp3 player out there that has as many categories as an ipod. usually they’re just “album” and “artist” ¬_¬

but that’s just my input.

Mine was a birthday present, and my mom bought it online September 9th. I got it a few days later, but it didn’t work properly so I had to send it back; the second one they sent me did the same thing, so it was my computer — and later, I realized, my USB port — that had the problem. I was pissed about the wait but their customer service was great, this lady named Julie called my house every few days to let me know what was going on. They’re sending me a free case for “my troubles” too, which is nice.

As far as the actual iPod goes, it’s my first too, and I’ve put about 700 songs on there. I’ve had trouble enabling it for disk use, but I guess I’m just not doing it right. And it really sucks that to really enjoy “Cover Flow” I have to find hundreds of album covers online to make it look pretty. Oh, and my battery is not long-lived at all (but it’s a quick recharge).

Besides that, I like it; Apple products are usually very user-friendly and accessible.

This ipod is really awesome. The only problem i hadwith this one is the fact that after a week or so the click wheel became a little loose. not really a big deal but i just though i’d say so. I also had another problem a while back that when i opened up cover flow the covers were just pink fuzz. so i plugged it into my computer and there was an update for that problem and a few others. it went away though.i liked the battery life. 24 long hours of music and 5 hours of straight video. It is so small to play video! overall great product. I give it a 7.5 out of ten.

My daughter received a 3rd generation ipod nano 8 gb for Christmas. It worked fine for a few days and now the video displays colors negatively. Looks somewhat like an infrared image. We tried resetting to the apple logo, hooking back up to the computer to reset to factory settings and the fix works momentarily. It reverts back to this reversed color scheme. Any help or insight into this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Click and hold the MENU and CENTRE button at the same time, when the iPod screen goes black quickly press and hold the CENTRE and REWIND button. You can change your iPod video settings there. To get out of the green diagnostic screen press and hold the MENU and CENTRE button again.

Peter Biddlecombe, maybe you should stick to vinyl mate.

Firstly, would I be right in saying that most classical music has been put on cd several times by different orchestras/artists etc over the years?

Do you really expect someone to catalogue all that?

What’s so hard about just right clicking and then clicking ‘get info’ where you can edit all the details you want, including the ability to put two cds into one album.

I’m not defending apple here by any means since I have seen itunes do some pretty freaky stuff with my libary including putting all the tracks on one album back to front.

But at the end of the day, it’s all editable.

Secondly, I don’t know what the crap you are taling about when you say it’s hard to find out which track is currently playing.

For a start, who cares????

You can find out what’s next by simply waiting for the current track to finish or even just by press right on the wheel.

It may have been easier to find the track listing on with cds but then, who wants to carry a rucksack full of fecking cds around with them?

The nano is a great projuct, stop whining about every stupid little fault you think you’ve found.

I have only had the nano 3rd generation for less than a month and it very often decides it wants to skip to the next track randomly, and sometimes it just won’t play the song, even though it loads the song, it just won’t play it. Kind of dissapointing since I can’t just listen to 5 minutes of music without it skipping to the next track or just quitting all together
If you could help me out please email me dixon.tm@gmail.com
thanks

I’ve had this 8gb nano for a week before it decided to completely die on me. It won’t reset, charge or even respond at all.

I really expected a better product from apple.

Wow.
That’s all I have to say.
I’ve owned the previous version of the iPod nano and I disliked the boring display and blocky body design. It also lacked Coverflow, a reasonable screen resolution, maybe a little color instead of just blue and white.
But the 3rd Gen. iPod nano caught my eye and I basically fell in love with it.
It’s got a very bright screen, great for people who don’t have the best of vision. But it can be bad for battery life. Secondly, the Coverflow feature is second from AMAZING. It keeps all my music organized in a very appealing way. MUCH better than going through a list of songs. So it’s good if you have a TON of music like me. The iPod is kind of confusing if you’ve never had one before, so a lot of people claim it’s “broken” when all it needs is to be reset. iTunes and the iPod also work perfectly in sync. It’s easy to figure out how to sync the iPod and you’ve got loads of options with easy navigation. The Apple Customer Support line is very helpful as well if you’ve got any questions.
I would totally recommend this MP3 player over anything else. iPod > Zune

I have the iPod Nano 4GB model, its a very nice little music player, it lasts the whole day, and it does what I tell it to do. however, I prefer having my songs on repeat, hence why the playcount is 756 on “LinkinPark - Breaking The Habbit” but after a few times on repeat my iPod will freeze, every time I plug it into my computer it will freeze, I have heard a lot of people having the same problem and I would like to know if anyone knows of any type of bug fix. my iPod is upgraded to the latest software and everyday I synchronize it I will constantly check for an update and there still is no more fixes. if anyone at all knows of anything to resolve this then please reply to this. thankyou

I just downloaded 493 songs to my ipod nano 3rd generation and as soon as it was done it said it was ok to disconnect. Well the bar went across and then is disconnected me from itunes and then the apple logo screen just keeps going off and on and i can’t do anything. I have even tried resetting it, but nothing.
