“The new MJ-12 8550i builds on the foundations set by previous Alienware workstations. Available in single and dual-processor customisations and featuring up to eight total processing cores, the machine should deliver around 50% greater performance than previous-generation Alienware Intel Xeon processor-based workstations. While it’s a solid machine and has immaculate build quality, similar-specified workstations can be had for less money from other companies. For example, Dell’s Precision 690n (from £979 ex. VAT) comes with a choice of Linux, up to 64GB DDR-2 667MHz quad-channel FBD memory, and a 19-inch TFT monitor is included. Dell also offers a raft of configuration options that Alienware can only dream about. Needless to say, Alienware continues to charge a premium price for its premium engineering. If raw specifications, features and support are more important than making a statement, spend your money elsewhere. For small businesses and sole traders on a relative budget looking for an attractive, reliable and easy-to-service system, the MJ-12 8550i should be considered.”
