“Probably the best part of the notebook is its lid. Finished in a combination of carbon fibre and smooth black plastic with the Ferrari logo sitting proudly in the middle, it truly looks and feels the part. Inside it’s perhaps a little less coordinated but nonetheless still attractive. There’s glossy black plastic around the bezel that attracts an awful lot of dust and which is continued around the keyboard, joined by more smooth black plastic around the sides and a textured touchpad. A bright red backlit power button adds to the Ferrari flavour, as does another Ferrari logo and lettering that’s backlit in the top right. ”

The bad: Mediocre multitasking performance; disappointing battery life; weak speakers. ”

“In terms of energy efficiency and environmental attributes, the Acer Ferrari 1100 is Energy Star 4.0-compliant, despite running a 2.3-GHz AMD processor. It hasn’t filed for EPEAT certification, but Acer follows proper recycling methods and is eliminating hazardous materials from production. According to my own energy tests, it consumed 34 watts in idle mode.”

“Indeed, the 1100’s benchmark scores were above average for its class: It garnered 2,683 on PCMark Vantage (about 200 points higher than the HP tx2000’s score, which costs $700 less but has the same processor and screen size). For graphics performance, it managed 1,765 on 3DMark03, with its ATI Radeon X1270 GPU and 512MB of shared video memory, which is squarely in the middle of the ultraportable and thin-and-light averages. You won’t be doing any hard-core gaming with this system, but it should be able to handle most other apps just fine.”
